25th Anniversary
Celebration Honoring Bruce Willenzik

pinecn.gif (13913 bytes)

In events held onstage in celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, Armadillo Christmas Bazaar Producer Bruce Willenzik was honored during the ceremonies. As continuing producer of the show since its inception, he has served as catalyst for this eclectic mix of artists and musicians who practice their unique talents every year in Austin's traditional holiday homecoming event.

The artists and staff saw fit to honor Bruce's contribution to their livelihoods and his ongoing support for the art and music that contribute to Austin's cultural richness. Mayor Pro-Tem Jackie Goodman presented Bruce a Proclamation from the Governor of Texas and US Congressman Lloyd Doggett. He was also honored with a proclamation from the Mayor of Austin, Texas.

The artists and staff presented Bruce with a certificate announcing that a park bench with bronze plaque had been installed by the City of Austin in his honor in Republic Square at 4th and San Antonio Streets. The bench honors Bruce's contributions to the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar and the cultural environment of Austin. The bench is on the southwest walkway which points toward the Austin Music Hall which is just a couple of blocks away. The plaque is mounted on the pea-gravel concrete sidewalk on the right side of the bench. Behind the bench in the block to the south is a parking lot which will soon be the site of the new Austin Museum of Art. As an aside, Bruce worked on a citizen's task force to preserve this park space.

Bruce was also given as a memento an original painting by long time Armadillo artist Mary Doerr. Her images of the Austin area are presented around a central theme each year in her calendars. Her theme for 2001 was "Bars, Pubs and Nightclubs". For her December painting, she has painted a scene of the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar at the Austin Music Hall.
