“If you run your business with strong community values then the community will value your business.”

Bruce Willenzik

Soon after the Armadillo World headquarters closed on December 31, 1980, Bruce Willenzik bought the production rights for the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar from Armadillo Production Inc. That effectively changed his role from manager to producer. As a cultural activist, Willenzik has served his community and the City of Austin on various boards, commissions and taskforces including:

  • Austin Arts Commission 1989-Present
  • Art In Public Places Panel 1990-1991, 1994-1995
  • Austin Comprehensive Arts Plan (ACAP) Taskforce.  1992-93
  • New Airport Terminal Taskforce  1994
  • Airport Advisory Board 1994-1999
  • Barbara Jordan Memorial Steering Committee  2000-2001
  • Downtown Commission 2000-Present
  • Republic Square Taskforce
  • Mayor’s Taskforce On Economic Growth
  • City Council appointed citizen advisor to design team for new City Hall

Willenzik has encouraged the careers of many artists, craftspeople and musicians. Under his leadership the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar has become a paradigm for co-operation and mutual benefit between artists, musicians, producer and community. Willenzik explains, “The Armadillo Bazaar is more than just an art show. It is a living laboratory for the study of individual, collective and community cultural prosperity.”

A few blocks from the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar sits a bench in Republic Square dedicated to Willenzik in recognition of his 25-year contribution to the cultural environment of Austin. More about the celebration honoring Willenzik can be viewed here.

  • Board of Liveable City, an urban issues think tank
