Armadillo (or, "Speed Bump, My Ass")

Clay

Price: $820

The Armadillo lends itself well to my work. A quirky character, it does not seem a far stretch for me to put my signature feet on him, stand him up and project an attitude that says, "Who you callin', 'Speed bump?"

Raku-fired, individually hand-crafted, sculptural ceramics. Approx size: 17.5"h x 9"w x 9"d

Completely inspired by the Bazaar’s call for armadillo art. Everything is bigger in Texas including armadillo art so I went as big as I could with a 5 x 5 foot panel. The reference photo is from my friend Alison who was obsessed with a roll of armadillos visiting her campsite in Texas hill country.

The drawing was done completely with a 2B graphite pencil and took 100 hours. The birch and maple panel is made from the artist. It is varnished and sealed on all sides. 24”x24” signed archival prints are available for $250.

The iconic song is the inspiration that pushed me to paint both my first attempts at Armadillos and a guitar (which is modeled after Marks personal one). When mulling over various designs I noticed this unique shaped platter Mark had made awhile back just sitting around collecting dust, it kinda looked a perfect shape to place a guitar. Then I conjured up some musical and dancing Dillos to accompany those special words we hear everyday at the Bazaar. Like most of my designs, I know the moment when it “feels right” and all the elements come together.

Platter is an original construction made from a form Mark creates in his own process of shaping unusual large pieces. After he has completed making and cleaning it, the dish goes thru a bisque firing. Then it is glazed and handpainted in an original design by Clare using uniquely vivid underglazes and stains before its final firing at over 2250 degrees.
It is 20” long by 14” wide (at largest point) and 2 1/2” tall. Made with high-fired porcelain, it is functional as dinnerware and will make a dynamic serving platter and/or serve double duty as an interesting art piece on its own either hanging or on a shelf.

Fused Glass

Price: $865

Armadillos aren't in my normal repertoire but I've certainly seen my share on our property in Fredericksburg. My rendition is much more colorful and cheerful looking than the real thing. I'm not sure how Armadillos got the be the State's official small mammal but it is. My fused glass armadillo is mounted on a wood panel that is painted like the Texas flag.

I first cut out the basic shape of an armadillo is black glass. Fused the pieces together in a kiln. Added glass dots previously made in the kiln and lots of dichroic glass pieces. Dichroic glass is coated with metal oxides which gives it a sparkly, iridescent look. I fired the whole piece again to 1380 degrees. When cooled, I glued it to a Texas flag painted panel 24" x 18" .

Armadillos on the Pedernales

5 color screen print on paper.

Price: $40

After some initial sketches, I decided the direction of my Armadillo piece should be heavily focused on the landscape around Austin and then include Armadillos in that landscape. One of the first places I fell in love with after moving here was Pedernales Falls State Park. Some friends took me there and we spent all day exploring the beautiful limestone formations along the river and I felt like I was on another planet. So I drew a calm scene of some armadillos walking down to the river to get some water.

This is a 5 color screen print that is 18x18". It was printed by hand one color at a time using custom mixed inks.

Everybody Is a Star

Pen and ink with gold leaf

Price: $1900

The nine-banded Armadillo, the Texas small state animal, and the lone star, a symbol of the state's independent spirit, are the surface imagery here. The armadillo can be representative of holing up to protect oneself and knowing when to act; the title, "Everybody is a Star," is a homage to the 1969 Sly and the Family Stone hit that announces everyone is special in their own way.
While we all need time to step back and regroup, when it's time to show up everyone can shine bright.

Detailed ink illustration on watercolor paper with layered gold leaf.

Stained Glass, Copper Foil

Price: $220

This piece is the 2.0 version of one of my very first original stained glass designs. It started as a lighthearted Texas tribute, a laid-back armadillo enjoying a cold one. I’ve recently revisited the original design, making adjustments & improvements that align with the growth in my skills to create this version. Reworking it reminded me how far I’ve come, and how much I still love creating pieces that mix grit, charm, and a little humor.

32 pieces of stained glass, each cut, grinded down to exact size, and carefully wrapped in copper foil tape before all being soldered together to provide structure and durability to to the design. Final glass piece measures 11.7x6.7.

Wood, ceramic and acrylic

Price: $675

One big armadillo is comprised of 50 small armadillos, each representing a single year in the 50 year history of the event.

Over the course of time, an army of Armadillo Bazaar recruits have collectively created what has become the great Armadillo Bazaar of today.

One lone armadillo marches in the reverse direction, representing the infamous 2020 pandemic.

The army of armadillos march on and continue to fight for peace, love and artistic expression!

The base is wood. The three dimensional pieces are ceramic. Drawn with liquid pen and painted with acrylic. Glass stones added for accents. Final coat of clear acrylic resin.

This whimsical armadillo weaves colors, texture and metallic reflections which are all cornerstones to my body of work. Butterflies in my art symbolize messengers of transformation and gentle connections to the spiritual world.

I blend molding paste with paint to build textured dimension, then apply a pointillist technique with individual dots of color. Reflective paints and markers add an iridescent glow, while metal leafing enhances the surface with a luminous sheen.

While at the Armadillo Bazaar last year, I felt inspired by the armadillo energy, so after working the show all day, sometime around midnight, I channeled my new armadillo piece.

Started with a chaotic background of color produced from the wetting of tissue paper. Used a 2nd paper to block out all colors except those used within the armadillo. Chance played its part as the armadillo came to life. I use black for the background to contrast the color and create an emphasis of the armadillo for the viewer.

Glass

Price: $148

Inspired by Austin's affinity for the "little armored ones" and the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar itself, this lil Dillo Bolo has been cut from two pieces of art glass and kiln-fired to over 1400 degrees. This particular glass is special in that it begins, unfired, as teal in color, but when fired the just-right amount turns to a matte slate in look and feel.

The Dillo Bolo was cut from two pieces of art glass and kiln-fired to over 1400 degrees. It's finished with woven black leather cord, a hand fabricated clasp, and classic sterling silver tips, all made in the USA. Armadillo: 5.6 x 3.2 cm, cord: 38" long.

Created for the 50th season of Austin’s Armadillo Bazaar, this playful welded-steel sculpture celebrates both craftsmanship and whimsy.

A welded steel armadillo wraps around a blue, orange, and clear glass sphere—an upcycled find from the Austin City Wide Vintage Sale—illuminated by a color-changing bulb. Resting on a textured steel base that echoes dirt and grass, the piece captures the curiosity and spirit of Texas’s beloved armored creature at play.

Price: $34

Our "Stay Wild Armadillo" embodies the spirit of Austin and the Texas Hill Country — curious, independent, and just the right amount of mischievous. Stay Wild is both a reminder and a celebration of what makes this community magic: the artists, makers, musicians, dreamers, and every person who keeps Austin creative. The artwork mixes retro festival nostalgia with a fresh, modern illustration style — playful, bold, and unapologetically Austin.

Hand-illustrated in Procreate and refined in Adobe Illustrator, the artwork is separated for screen printing with attention to detail and color accuracy. Each shirt is designed, printed, and finished in-house — start to finish — at our small, women-owned studio in Liberty Hill, Texas.
