Dreams of Austin

Acrylic on wood and hand-shaped MDF

Growing up in Austin was my main inspiration for this piece. My many memories of spending warm evenings in nature along the Greenbelt or camping at McKinney falls, watching the bats flock from the Congress Avenue bridge or watching the sun set on the skyline from Zilker Park or Auditorium Shores, all culminate in this work. I wanted to capture the essence of my ever-evolving city and the tranquil beauty of the natural flora and fauna so interwoven throughout the growing urban landscape.

Stepping into its 50th season, the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar unveils a new logo by Austin’s own Blase Design, featuring “Dottie”. It’s a striking departure from the previous design’s rustic trio of armadillos stacked like a Christmas tree, reflecting the Bazaar’s bold, creative, and inclusive spirit while still honoring its deep Texas roots.

The featured art is a chainstitched depiction of The Armadillo Bazaar, with all the little dillos headed down the road to the big event under a magical star filled sky, surrounded by a landscape of neon cactus and twinkle light tumbleweeds.

This piece draws inspiration from the long history of the Austin Armadillo Art Bazaar; its roots in and my interpretation of Austin with the Armadillo Bazaar being at its core. I’ve grown up attending the Armadillo Art Bazaar, it is definitely the thing to do at Christmas in Austin. My parents began showing at the Bazaar in 2010, selling Austin Photomontages (as well as photomontages of other cities). My goal was to create a piece that embodied the artwork my parents sold at the Armadillo Bazaar while incorporating a sense of family and stillness that co-exists at that time of year. I while used a warm palette to articulate how cozy and welcoming the Armadillo Bazaar is for artists, musicians and patrons — it is such a unique Austin Tradition. The Armadillo Art Bazaar is a creative hub and it could only happen in Austin. The Bazaar marries the Austin of the past with the Austin of the present; many memories have been made here, it’s an anchor in a time of great change for Austin (and the state and the country and the world) and is one the few things that continue to make Austin “Austin”. It’s a Holiday time capsule of art and music and I was thrilled to be participate as the featured artist in 2021. ¡Viva la Dillo! Armadillo Bazaar 4/ever! — xo Caya Crum — Crum Art

Paper Collage

I often try to use related printed materials in my collage work. Since the Armadillo artists end every show day with the song “London Homesick Blues” I decided to use the lyrics on the guitar. This piece was purchased by a lovely couple that I met at my very first year of showing at the ‘Dillo and they hung this piece by their front door, so it greets them every day when they come home.

Armadillo on Keyboard AKA Twinkle Toes

Acrylic on canvas

Inspired by Austin's beloved Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, this whimsical piece captures the spirit of an event where art and live music have danced together for decades. Robert Hurst imagined what it might look like if the Bazaar's iconic mascot took center stage himself, strolling across the piano keys, owning the moment, and making music all his own.

Being a multigenerational Texan it was a honor to make this mosaic. No matter where I roam, Texas will always be home.
There was a time, not that long ago, when you could see musicians outside jamming on their porches or playing in bars on every corner of Austin.
Knowing the history of The Armadillo World Headquarters, make me proud to be a part of this annual event that works to keep the legend alive and honored to make this commemorative piece.

The Musician

I created The Musician as the featured art during my fourteenth year of participating in The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar. Traditionally an Armadillo might be incorporated into the design. However, having started my journey with the Armadillo at the old Austin Music Hall, I decided to pay homage to the part that made this show unique in what it was. An art show inside a music venue. So, The Musician, became my addition to the many works that came before. While not having the traditional armadillo, it was my feeling that the bellows on an accordion were vaguely reminiscent of the ridges on the back of the titular creature, and I enjoy this type of subtle approach. And the multi-instrumental nature of the character was designed to be inclusive of the variety of talented musicians who had graced the stage over the many years of this beloved show.

Bruce asked Sherry Matthews Agency to help us with a new logo. To keep the peace among artists, Bruce said he didn’t want to know who the artist was, so he could tell artists who asked that we didn’t pick the artist, just the artwork.
